Meet Johan

Meet Johan, 21 years old, who still smiles despite a condition so rare most people have never heard of it before. Chromosome 8p Inverted Duplication.

His mother, visionary and co-author of For the Love of Our Children, Rose-Anne Partridge, who cares for him full-time in Ontario, Canada said it has not been an easy journey for her son but he is ‘always smiling’. ‘He’s a wonderful, gentle soul but it’s not always easy for children like him because even though he enjoys interacting with other people sometimes they feel very awkward with him or misunderstand what it means to be non-verbal. Even though Johan cannot put his thoughts into vocalized words, he comprehends and is very good at responding with various gestures and even a bit of sign language.’

‘He can’t dress himself or do a lot of things we take for granted. And it’s things like not having friends to play with, or ever having been invited to a birthday party that brings a bit of sadness to Rose-Anne; things that every other child typically experiences as they grow up. And now with severe scholiosis, his mobility is very restricted.

Unfortunately, there’s not enough money in it to make it worth researching such a rare disorder.’ And for most of Johan’s life this medical condition which is so rare that it has no “special” name had no support groups to turn to — at least until Rose-Anne discovered Project 8p and other similar groups on FaceBook. Project 8p is committed to maximizing every opportunity and resource, which is why Rose-Anne wanted to combine her publishing efforts with helping to raise funds for this cause.

Many parents will agree that navigating the roads of parenthood is a challenging task, even at the best of times. However, when you have a child with special needs, the list of considerations and tasks only grows. It begins by learning about the special needs of the child, researching further, locating and accessing effective treatments and resources that conventional parenting doesn’t require. And imperatively, coping with the emotional and physical demands of caring for an individual with special needs.

Project 8p

Project 8p Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is researching 8p disorders to find treatment options and give meaningful answers to those affected and their families. We are patient-led. Currently, there is no cure for 8p disorders, nor is there a standard course of treatment.

We are living in the age of scientific discovery. With a strong network of companies and organizations around the world that are partnering together, rare diseases are being diagnoses and therapies are being developed to improve and save lives. While there are many obstacles to overcome, there is astonishing progress with repurposing of existing drugs, new drugs, and cutting-edge gene and cell therapy that is happening at a faster pace than imagined by the scientific and pharmaceutical community.

Project 8p is an active member of this community and aims to help everyone that is impacted by chromosome 8p to achieve their goals on their own unique journey. Project 8p is committed to maximizing every opportunity and resource.

Testimonials

We are so grateful for all the parents who have purchased a copy of our book already. Hundreds of copies of this book is in the hands of those who are on a similar journey. And the main comment I hear from them all is, “This was so needed! It makes me feel so comforted knowing others can relate to what we are experiencing with our child.”

Absolutely loved this book! Saw myself in many of the words and emotions expressed. Thanks for publishing. It takes a village. Sharing your darkest times may inspire others to get through theirs. These are what got me through the tough times over the years and inspire me to share our story. So proud of Susan Baker (co-author) as she highlights her family’s struggles and triumphs in ‘For the Love of our Children.’ I laughed and cried and saw myself in her words. This is what keeps me moving forward.
