Recharging your body, mind, and soul

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”
— John Muir (1838-1914)
Most of the people I know would agree with me when I mention that getting away from the city and surrounding oneself with nature is one of the best ways to recharge the body, mind, and soul. It is my best prescription for relief of everyday stress.
But also, just like most people I know, it isn’t always that easy to get away to recharge as often as I would like. So my solution is to take mini nature breaks by just getting outside for walks around the block soaking up as much “fresh” air as possible, and looking at the well-thought out gardens along the way.
Just a little bit of nature everyday can help to balance out the surge of technology that we are faced with most days. Treat yourself with a daily dose of nature — walk, look out the window, or even get a few plants in your office space. It doesn’t take much, but it will have wonderful benefits for your body, mind, and soul in the long run.
And on the more serious side of things — we are quickly forgetting as a society the importance of nature with our energetic balance. More and more children are plopping themselves in front of digital media to experience life, when they really would benefit from running around in a forest.
Here are some books on the importance of aligning yourself and your children with nature again.
Managing your body

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn
I believe that each individual is responsible for their own health and well-being. And being responsible for it means we need to learn how to effectively manage our health — as unique individuals.
There are three important points to consider when you manage your health:
1. Be informed
2. Communicate with your body
3. Find solutions that work specifically for you
That may mean you have to do your own research. It may mean that you begin to listen when your body is letting you know something is or is not working. And it may mean resorting to methods that are considered “alternative” by the mainstream, because the solution must work for you as a unique individual.

Taking a deeper look

“You need to listen to your body because your body is listening to you.” — Phillip C. McGraw
I went to a reflexologist a while ago. What an amazing experience. And I was amazed at how my feet were able to say so much about me.
She would press in one spot and I would squirm. “Ah, this is your digestive track. Something you are eating is maybe not being tolerated that well.” OK. She caught me eating wheat, when I know my body works best without it.
Then another spot. “Hmmm. Maybe some anger issues here?” What? I thought I was done with my anger! Well, my foot says otherwise, so time to look deeper I guess.
The list went on and on. I was a little shocked I have to admit. But nothing that I could really say was completely off. Just stuff that I really thought I was good with now. But my body is doing its best to tell me otherwise. It’s good to keep looking deeper, cause you really never know what you will find. Since then, I have been working through these issues one by one… and my feet are thanking me for it.
Slow down and hear the message

“The more severe the pain or illness, the more severe will be the necessary changes. These may involve breaking bad habits, or acquiring some new and better ones.”
— Peter McWilliams, Life 101
No one likes to be sick, but at this time of year it seems almost unavoidable, especially if you have young children in school who are constantly being exposed to viruses and contagious germs. I had been holding off strong until just last week when finally one caught up with my son…and then me. Surprisingly, the topic for the day in Simple Abundance by Sarah ban Breathnach was “When You’re Sick”, as if I had timed it on purpose.
The message was clear — give myself time to be sick (translation: slow down for a moment and take care of yourself!) So I gave myself the morning off…sort of. Don’t forget, my son was sick too.
Every sickness has a lesson for us if we are able to look deeper into our lives. Some can be as simple as taking some time off. Others can be more complicated and profound. The next time you are sick, after doing all you can do to make yourself feel better, take a moment to see if there is some lesson in it for you. And do your best to incorporate the necessary changes into your life to allow for a complete healing to take place.

How to be successful

“Four short words sum up what has lifted most successful individuals above the crowd: a little bit more. They did all that was expected of them and a little bit more.”
— A. Lou Vickery
Courage, the ability to overcome fear and confront the unknown head on, and will power are all ingredients for success. Often, success is as much the product of will power and a refusal to give up as it is anything else.
The healthy successful person is someone who believes in themselves; someone who can take control of the situation and bring events to a positive end. They do what everyone else can do, and they continue to do it until they have reached the ultimate goal — success.
Obesity in Children on the rise

You might have seen Dr. Oz on Oprah talking about childhood and teen obesity — that’s just one indication of how serious the issue is becoming. Research indicates that more Canadian children are overweight and obese than in the past. In 1978/79, 12% of 2- to 17-year-olds were overweight, and 3% were obese—a combined overweight/obesity rate of 15%. By 2004, the overweight rate for this age group was 18% and 8% were obese—a combined rate of 26%.
Here are some tips from a good friend and nutritionist, Cheryl Millett:
Obesity in Children
Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. Both terms mean that a person’s weight is greater than what is considered healthy for his or her height. Children grow at different rates, so it isn’t always easy to know when a child is obese or overweight. Ask your doctor to measure your child’s height and weight to determine if he or she is in a healthy range.
If a weight-loss program is necessary, involve the whole family in healthy habits so your child doesn’t feel singled out. You can encourage healthy eating by serving more fruits and vegetables and buying fewer sodas and high-calorie, high-fat snack foods. Physical activity can also help your child overcome obesity or being overweight. Kids need about 60 minutes each day. from National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

Real Life Radio with Jenna Howe discussing The Bowen Technique for concussions

A graduate of George Brown College Fitness and Lifestyle Management, Jenna Howe´s emphasis is whole body regeneration. Jenna´s health and fitness services, Body Design, was founded in 1996 and recently renamed Rejeneration to encapsulate her vision of whole body wellness and rejuvenation.
In 2002, Jenna was introduced to The Bowen Technique through a good friend and massage therapist. From that moment onward she knew that Bowen Therapy would be an integral part of her business. Through the years Jenna has worked on numerous physical issues and illness, children, elderly and athletes (both for chronic and acute injuries).
Jenna has been collaborating with a colleague in California in bringing The Bowen Technique to the forefront of addressing Post Concussion Syndrome. This innovative discovery has lead Jenna down an exciting path that now includes continuing her studies at York University in psychology with a special interest in neuroscience. Jenna is interested in working with all levels of athletes from children to adults, recreational to professional. Ultimately, the goal is for athletes of all ages and abilities to feel confident that there is a safe, effective treatment for concussions that will prolong their sporting career. Currently (in North America), the most known treatment is a ‘wait and see’ approach which can potentially put many athletes at risk for long term symptoms, becoming re-concussed, and increases the likelihood of not reporting even minor symptoms (to parents, coaches, trainers).
Jenna’s’ interest in Exercise and Cancer Recovery began in 2003 and led her to Colorado in 2005 to become a Cancer Exercise Specialist through the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute located at The University of Northern Colorado. The role of exercise in cancer recovery is not to increase fitness level, but quality of life and after many years of research there is still some misconceptions of the role exercise can play in the recovery process. Jenna can help navigate your way through these misconceptions and provide you with the knowledge and expertise to safely exercise during cancer treatments and for post cancer rehabilitation.
Although Jenna has been focused on primarily rehabilitation in various forms over the years, she has still never forgotten her love of dance. Dance can be therapeutic on many levels and while attending a conference in 2007 Jenna found Zumba. A Latin inspired dance fitness class that is guaranteed to inspire you to move!
Committed to educating and providing health and wellness services to the Kawartha Lakes region as well as the Greater Toronto Area, Jenna conducts workshops, consultations, lectures and Zumba classes at your preferred venue: residence, office or clinic.
